3. Speech Enhancement using 4-element Microphone Array Beamforming Combined with Blind Signal Separation

This study is presented by Rodrigo C. Muñoz, Jr. and Nilo T. Bugtai. The study is about enhancing speech quality and reduction of interference especially in a noisy environment. It is a good project since interfering signals reduces the quality of sound. The researchers investigates the beam patterns of NBF, BSS, and NBF+BSS, the combined system is shown to provide clear improvement in reduction of direct parts of interfering signals.

But the study is not that reliable since they only tested it in a closed car which doesn’t have lots of interfering signals present. But still they were able to reduced noises from the conversation on the phone so the voices will be clearer compared to ordinary conversation over the phone without filtering the noises.

Effect of the Oceanic Water Intrusions into Kagoshima bay

Mr. Hosotani was the first speaker I have heard during the IERC Seminar. His talk was about the water quality of Kagoshima Bay. They have monitored the bay using images recorded from satellites and from public water monitoring data. The technology they have used in this project is surprising. Being able to use a satellite was an amazing feat that was implemented in this study. The study not only used of a normal satellite camera, they used it to detect certain characteristics of the water making some images that cant be seen by the naked eye clearer. Based on the study that was presented, i have realized that Japan is good country to have studied. There country is supportive to many things, especially education. The coverage of this study is a proof of their engineering capability and resources.

Return Period of Tropical Cyclone Phenomena
Mr. Walag of the USC Water Resources Center proved of the great capabilities that this institution has. His study on the data gathered from previous years about the typhoons that struck the Philippines is a very relevant study that can help our country in minimizing accidents from typhhon calamities. He showed us data that our structures here in the Philippines can barely withstand the strong winds that typhoons create. This is due to the increasing strength that typhoons show recently. He suggested that our standards must be changed with respect to the new data that is gathered from the latest typhoons. This suggestion is strongly recommended for our country since his data shows that Philippines, being located near the Pacific Ocean, is always in threat of strong typhoons. By changing the standards that we apply on our structures, we boost they safety that our buildings can give us. This can ensure that our buildings and houses wont just crumble down when hit with these strong winds. It also gives us a possible way to prolong our homes.

Wind Energy Observation of Traditional River Traffic System
Mr. Mishima is a student of Tsuyama National College. Although still an undergraduate, he already had the chance to show to us his study. It was amazing enough that he was able to present his study in the seminar though he was still a student, but what was more amazing was the scope of his study. It made me realize the extent that the Japanese students pursue for their studies. His study on the River Traffic is somewhat incomparable to what most of the studies that we do here in the Philippines. It made me ponder on how much resources and support that their institution had given him. Although his study made me feel little in terms of knowledge and development, the fact that he stood there and discussed his study made me realize that even as a student, we can give something to the world. His presence made me see what a student like me can offer if given the right chance and circumstance to do so.

IERC is one of the best conference seminar that. It offered knowledge and updates of what the world is doing now in its many countries.

Giangan, Angelie M.
Multiobjective Simulation Optimization for Bridge Maintenance Planning
This study entitled “Multiobjective Simulation Optimization for Bridge Maintenance Planning” was presented by Proffesor Tung Yang from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The study was about how to develop a successful bridge management by considering the risks associated with bridge deterioration and maintenance cost in determining the optimal maintenance plan. It also shows what solution or a model to be used to assess the impact of risks on the objective values, at an acceptance level of reliability which gives a different level of performance that are being look forward in building a bridge or any infrastructure.
This study proposed a type of model that considers maintenance actions for reinforced concrete bridge; one of the mentioned action is the minor concrete repair, the nice thing about this study is that the condition is significantly improved while the safety remains unchanged. The minor concrete repair is to replace cover concrete that has visual defects but not reinforcement bars.
This study is very useful for future civil engineers to be able to develop successful bridges at the right cost. Since, in building bridges or any infrastructures we can’t deny the fact that money or budget is really something to be considered, we should find a way to be able to put up something that considers different factors but doesn’t reduce the performance that we would like to achieve and does not risk especially the security or safety measures.

Speech Enhancement using 4-element Microphone Array Beamforming Combined with Blind Signal Separation

This study was conducted by Rodrigo C. Muñoz, Jr. and his colleagues. This study was about speech enhancement of noisy speech in real world environments using multiple microphones. It can be applied to most speech communication systems including automatic speech recognition, speech compression and acoustic echo cancellation. Beamforming was combined with Blind Signal Separation to enhance speech using multiple microphones. In beamforming, signals are separated using the directional information of the signals with respect to the microphones. On the other hand, blind signal separation does not use any information on the signals and assumes that original signals are statistically independent to each other.

The study will enhance the automatic speech recognition like for instance in cars and ATM machines wherein most often these are exposed to noises, through this study it helps to reduce the unnecessary noise and enhances the original signal and thus it gives convenience to the user.

Assessment of the Safety and Health Practices of Construction Company

This study was presented by Mr. Ronaldo Gallardo of De La Salle University. In his presentation he mentioned that many construction company have safety guidelines but it is still very hard to quantify if the implementation of their safety program is adequate or satisfactory in eliminating accidents. He and his fellow colleagues conducted a survey on different AAA construction company if these safety guidelines did help eliminate accidents in their construction sites. The figures at his presentation showed that the guidelines did help to lessen the accidents.

Flowchart Translator and Code Generator with GUI-IDE (FTCG):
“A Visual Teaching Tool for IT/Eng’g Educators Teaching Programming Logic and Design using Flowcharts “

Specific task of learning to program is quite challenging and it is well recognized as a time-consuming and frustrating process for the majority of novice programmers not until FTCG was developed by Anthony Undang a professor from CIT. This FTCG helps a programmer to lessen the time consumed in making the program code. From the flowchart diagram the FTCG will convert the diagram into a C programing code. This helps a lot but the FTCG limited capability because it only converts basic instructions such as loops and variable declaration.

Pepania Roberto Jr.
Flowchart Translator and Code Generator with GUI-IDE (FTCG)
It is a study about a flowchart translator and a code generator (FTCG) with a graphical user interface development environment by Anthony Undag. FTCG is a visual programming tool that allows the creation and execution of program flowcharts. Moreover, the system can convert flowcharts into a program using a particular programming language.

This program the FTCG provides easy to use interface like drag and drop icons on screen for easy creation and execution of flowcharts. It also has a debugging option, wherein users may observe and analyze variable values. Flowcharts may be ran in 3 ways; (1) either execute all symbols to verify if the flowchart is logically correct; (2) execute symbol by symbol to examine flowchart behavior (3) or toggle a break point to allow the user to skip other symbols and proceed to a location where the user wants to start debugging. One of the best features of FTCG is the ability to translate flowchart into a running code of a particular language. At present, it can only translate into a valid C Program, but eventually it is anticipated that it will also translate various languages to support users using different programming languages.

FTCG is intended to be used by both students and instructors. By using the tool, students will be able to create a flowchart, test the behavior of the flowchart by executing it and then convert the flowchart into a running code. By initially solving the problem and expressing the solution using flowcharts, students may focus more on the problem solving process and less worry on the program code and syntax.

SRP PLANNING

Engr. Lynn Gloria A. Madrona, an Assistant Professor of the Civil Engineering Department of San Jose Recoletos. Presented A movement is the relocation of a force and materiel to desired areas of operations. To accomplish a movement plans are developed and movement operations are conducted in order for people to have easier and comfortable access to the place. It connotes an issue about the wide road project named the SRP (South Road Properties). For some time now, SRP remains as it is, underdeveloped with a few institutions at hand. It is big land that needs to be developed by having buildings and infrastructures that will lead to more jobs and opportunities for a lot of jobless Filipinos.
This proposed project is called the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit). This is supposed to be an answer to the increasing population if motor and vehicles that causes traffic and thus wastes time for us. Through this, it will be much easy for any one. Cebu City’s plan to adopt the bus rapid transit (BRT) system excites supporters and likewise raises the eyebrows of skeptics.

Many people may raise their eyebrows but if this project succeeds, it is an opportunity for SRP especially the city itself. It will really help us boost our economy by giving opportunities to a lot of people. Through this, a lot of people will improve their way of living by working well and earning their own salaries. But in terms of nature, there may be some things that might be taken for granted. But before doing this proposed project, it needs further studying for it be not only beneficial for the people, but also good for nature itself.

Speech Enhancement using 4-element Microphone Array Beamforming Combined with Blind Signal Separation
Microphone array is not new anymore. It is already available in a handful of devices or gadgets such as laptops and some smart phones. It is a handy add-on to such devices so you wouldn’t have to equip your gadgets with external microphones which would limit its portability. Like most laptops where this microphone array is lined up along the array of speakers, you only have to talk directly in front of the laptop without caring or needing to know the orientation of the microphones, and the array will capture your voice just right.

The study presented by Rodrigo C. Muñoz, Jr. and Nilo T. Bugtai is about enhancing speech quality and reduction of interference especially in a noisy environment. It is a good project since interfering signals reduces the quality of sound. The researchers investigates the beam patterns of NBF, BSS, and NBF+BSS, the combined system is shown to provide clear improvement in reduction of direct parts of interfering signals.

This study was made to develop speech enhancement of microphones within the car. The microphones in our cellphones presently uses 2-element microphone array. With this study, they were able to develop speech enhancement by using 4-element array microphone. But the study is not that reliable since they only tested it in a closed car which doesn’t have lots of interfering signals present. But still they were able to reduced noises from the conversation on the phone so the voices will be clearer compared to ordinary conversation over the phone without filtering the noises.

SRP Transportation Plan

The subject was basically both about the development and modernization of the mode of transportation in South Road Properties area. The main idea is to implement the already existing transportation bus systems in other countries. They call it the BRT or the Bus Rapid Transit system. The system includes a radical but progressive overhaul of the area’s infrastructure as well as the public vehicles that operate within it.

The study was lead and presented by Engr. Lynn Gloria A. Madrona, an Assistant Professor of the Civil Engineering Department of University of San Jose Recoletos. The feasibility study of the project was carried out by a team supported by the local government.

The study is particularly significant to us computer engineers and students in the grand scale that these systems will be implemented. Soon many such large systems will rise. These systems need meticulous studies, analysis, and eventually will also need to be automated in order to maximize their potentials.

I personally was interested in this study particularly because not only will we spearhead such system from Cebu to the country but also it provided me a glimpse of the future. I previously became aware of plans in Washington DC, the busiest streets of U.S. because of all the government and commercial activities, to implement the first ever city-wide public personal pod transport system in the world where only intelligent pods drive people to their destination because of the city’s extreme necessity. This, like our proposed BRT system though not in the same scale as DC’s but still in the same direction, will dramatically reduce traffic, pollution, accident fatalities, and disorder while increasing the city’s commerce, efficiency, and prestige.

Flowchart Translator and Code Generator with GUI-IDE

The FTCG, as it is called, is a teaching tool that has the capabilities of generating executable codes out of a provided flowchart. It makes use of an excellent Graphic User Interface Development Environment to follow through a flowchart. Therefore, one may cross examine any algorithm and its logical errors without even having coded it yet. It features many modes of inspection namely. One runs the code generated from the flowchart in its entirety, another checks it step by step, yet another check from a specified point of the chart.

This is the study presented by Engr. Anthony Undang of Cebu Institute of Technology, and is his master’s degree thesis. He wanted to create a tool to effectively teach the students the foundational skill of flowcharting.

This study is obviously very relevant to the Computer Engineering discipline. Soon it will be inevitable to improve, apply to more fields, and expand the use of this tool. All areas of Computer Engineering make use of flowcharting as its groundworks. Also, an essence of our branch of learning is automation. In my opinion, this can not only be use as a teaching tool but as a Computer Aided Systems Engineering (CASE) tool for developers as well.

I hope one day to be in Engr. Undang’s shoes, particularly, working on something beneficial to current and future developers. I loved the idea that it brings to center the most important skill to programming that is to flowchart. I believe tools such as these are in many ways similar to what scientific calculators are to mathematicians. They don’t necessary mean that the user doesn’t know how to do the operations but instead they enhance and help his skills focus on more relevant issues.

Speech Enhancement using 4-element Microphone Array Beamforming Combined with Blind Signal Separation

The research combines both Beamforming and Blind Signal Separation for Microphone Array in order to enhance the quality of sound received by microphones. The study is basically an improvement on an already existing technology of noise cancellation with microphone arrays. Beamforming is a signal processing technique used in sensor arrays for directional signal transmission or reception. This spatial selectivity is achieved by using adaptive or fixed receive/transmit beampatterns. On the other hand, Blind signal separation, also known as blind source separation, is the separation of a set of signals from a set of mixed signals, without the aid of information (or with very little information) about the source signals or the mixing process. Blind signal separation relies on the assumption that the source signals do not correlate with each other. By combining these two processing techniques, they have produced a higher quality speech isolation and enhancement.

The study was conducted and presented by Engr. Rodrigo Munoz Jr. and his colleagues. They are from Bataan Peninsula State University.

This research will ultimately emphasize the links among the varied engineering disciplines. In terms of Computer Engineering, it goes to show that our focus could go beyond the textbooks we are reading. Analog signals such as sound, for practicality’s sake, need to be converted into digital signals. Computer processing of such signal separations is needed, if not obligatory, to achieve accurate results.

I believe development in this technological area is significant though ordinary folks don’t normally notice it. But if they were to live in a world without it, I’m sure they’ll really try to find ways to create it. Sound enhancement can not only be applied to voice and communications but also in varied scientific, investigative, and security puroses.
