CICT to computerize 320 public high schools
By Lawrence Casiraya
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 11:16am (Mla time) 10/19/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- The Commission on Information and Communications Technology expects to computerize 320 public high schools within the year through a project that donates computers loaded with open source software.
Called iSchools (or eEskwela), the CICT is implementing the project with the help of the Department of Education and state-run universities and colleges (SUCs).
Each school will receive an iSchools package consisting of 20 desktop PCs, a server, wireless networking equipment, LCD projector, a multifunction printer and two airconditioning units.
The PCs are loaded with several open-source tools including EdUbuntu (a version of Ubuntu designed for schools), OpenOffice, Apache, MySQL and Mozilla Firefox, among others.
Each school is required to send a minimum of 18 faculty personnel to several training programs, including onsite courses for basic computer and Internet literacy.
Some 25 SUCs will also be holding computer courses for high school teachers. Each school's designated computer lab manager will likewise undergo technical training.
Moreover, each school will be required to send an English teacher along with a student (preferably the editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper) to a week-long Web development course. Each school is then expected to create its own website.
The iSchools project is supported by the P1-billion eGovernment fund, a special annual allocation from the government for IT-related projects.
The CICT reviews project proposals submitted by government agencies and once approved, recommends the same to the Budget department for funding.
Tim Diaz de Rivera, CICT commissioner for eGovernment, said in an interview at least 20 percent of the eGovernment fund (or about P200 million) automatically goes to education-related initiatives like iSchools.
About 75 percent of the P200 million is spent of hardware, which covers PCs and other equipment, he said.

I. News Article
Apple Security: Time To Stop Feeling Superior?
By Thomas Claburn
Read the Original Article at InformationWeek

Apple issued 35 security updates in 2008, down slightly from the 38 issued in 2007, but significantly more than the 22 security updates in 2006 and 23 in 2005.
In a report on the state of Mac security, Intego -- a seller of Mac security software -- claims, "There have been far more [Apple-related] security problems in the past two years than in previous years, requiring Mac users to be more vigilant than ever to ensure that their computers are safe and secure."
Intego dutifully recounts the Mac malware it saw in 2008. Variants of the RSPlug Trojan horse, first noticed in October 2007, surfaced in April 2008 and again in November and December. There was a new Mac OS X Trojan in June, OSX.Trojan.PokerStealer. And several rogue security programs for the Mac were spotted: Macsweeper, iMunizator, and MacGuard.
The company also notes that significant vulnerabilities were reported in Apple Remote Desktop software and in QuickTime, which is also available for Windows.
"Mac OS X, while more secure than Windows, contains its share of flaws, and Apple has to constantly keep on its toes to issue a couple dozen security updates each year, to Mac OS X in general, as well as to specific parts of Mac OS X that are often found to contain vulnerabilities," Intego said in its report.
About a month ago, Apple removed an old support Web page that suggested the use of multiple antivirus applications to keep Macs secure. "The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box," an Apple spokesman said in an e-mailed statement. "However, since no system can be 100% immune from every threat, running antivirus software may offer additional protection."
In March, a team of security researchers from Independent Security Evaluators proved that point by exploiting a flaw in Apple's Safari 3.1 Web browser to compromise a MacBook Air.
Alex Eckelberry, CEO of Sunbelt Software, a maker of Windows security software, said in an e-mail that there is some malware on the Mac, though it tends to rely on social rather than technical engineering. He said that the breadth of infection caused by Mac malware is nowhere near as severe as infections spread by Windows malware.
"Generally, I wouldn't tell anyone not to run security software, but in the case of the Mac, I'm certainly more understanding if someone decides not to," he said. "Since the bulk of infections that may be occurring would be occurring through social engineering, if someone is reasonably cautious (doesn't open links that aren't trusted, doesn't download software from sites that aren't from their originator, like Flash), then they're fairly safe."
However, Mac users shouldn't be too complacent. "My only concern is that we don't know when the other shoe will drop with Macs," Eckelberry added. "The Mac market is getting mature enough that it may become a real target for attack by malware authors. 2009 may be that year."

1. news article:

Recession be damned! IT security spending up for some

The economy may be in tatters, along with legions of IT security budgets. But a new report from Forrester Research suggests security spending is actually on the rise in some enterprises.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based research firm interviewed nearly 1,000 firms for its State Of Enterprise IT Security: 2008-2009 report and found, among other things, that the security portion of IT budgets is expected to rise 12.6 percent in 2009, up from 7.2 percent in 2007 and 11.7 percent in 2008.

"Even during challenging economic conditions, IT security remains an integral part of business operations as firms look to maintain their current environment as well as plans for the implementation of new initiatives," wrote Forrester analyst Jonathan Penn, the report's chief author. In a follow-up interview, he told CSOonline that companies still aren't looking at security as a business enabler. But they now understand that it's at least better to take steps to prevent attacks than to do nothing.

"Security is getting a bigger slice of the IT pie, with the focus less on reactive vulnerability defenses and more on looking at what's necessary to protect the business," Penn said. "More often than not, the focus is on protecting the data itself."

Spending not up for all CSOonline conducted its own poll on the subject and found, not surprisingly, security professionals who see a different picture in their own environments.

A security officer who manages IT security operations for a county government on the east coast said he has faced tough budget choices.

"As with all other state/local governments, we are directly impacted by the housing decline, unemployment and a decrease in state funding," said the security officer, who asked to remain anonymous because he isn't authorized to speak to the press. "Because of this, revenue decreases for next fiscal year (beginning in July) are estimated at between 10-25 percent."

His choice was either to cut staff from an already lean team or decrease operating expenses. He decided to reduce existing spending, largely on the technology front.

Zach Lanier, senior network security analyst at Harvard Business School, said overall, security spending at his organization will be down, mainly because it has completed initiatives that started and closed in 2008. Costs for those projects in 2009 will be mostly operational expenditures, he said.

"We're not immune to the economy's poor performance. While Harvard Business School has traditionally been a big spender, the current conditions have caused us to think twice just in case," he added. "I would be inclined to add that it's also caused my organization to think twice about different ways of tackling problems."

For example, he said, the organization has turned to "high-performance" commercial products to get it to that "85 percent" and filled in the rest with free and open source tools. "Also," he said, "we've stepped back a bit and looked at processes and procedures and how those can be improved rather than just throwing money at a vendor."

Security not linked to economy Others confirm their organizations' plans reflect Forrester's findings. In these cases, security is an ongoing necessity unaffected by economic peaks and valleys.

"In the government, pressures caused by data losses has prompted more spending," said a UK-based IT security specialist who requested anonymity because he isn't authorized to speak to the press.

According to the Forrester report, firms are devoting 11.7 percent of their company's IT operating budget to IT security in 2008 compared with 7.2 percent in 2007, and they plan to continue nudging up IT security budgets in 2009 to 12.6 percent of the IT operating budget. Allocation of budget for new security initiatives mirrors this trend, going from 17.7 percent in 2008 to 18.5 percent in 2009, Penn said.

"There has been a clear and significant shift from what was the widely recognized state of security just a few years Ago," the report notes. "Protecting the organization's information assets is the top issue facing security programs: data security (90 percent) is most often cited as an important or very important issue for IT security organizations, followed by application security (86 percent), and business continuity/disaster recovery (84 percent)."

Meanwhile, the report said, areas like threat management (81 percent) and regulatory compliance (80 percent) are cited less frequently. Data security also tops the list of business objectives for security, with 89 percent citing protection of corporate data and 87 percent citing protection of personal data as important or very important business objectives.

When security budgets aren't measured In some cases, it's hard to figure out how far up or down spending is because the company in question doesn't have a specific line item for security.

"Most companies I have worked with don't even measure any type of security budget," said Nalneesh Gaur, chief information security architect and principal at Diamond Management & Technology Consultants Inc. in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. "As a consultant, I get involved with companies where something bad has happened like getting hacked. With getting hacked as the driver, I often see a surge in priority for security where the company will spend a lot of money."

The trick is if they can sustain the program after the first year, he said.

Intel Wireless Power Transmission

Intel is working on a way for your laptop to get not just data wirelessly, but power as well. The company claims to have made progress in increasing the efficiency of a technique for wirelessly powering consumer devices.

Magnetic fields are used to broadcast up to sixty watts of power for short distances - two or three feet. Only 25% of the power is lost in transmission.

“Something like this technology could be embedded in tables and work surfaces,” said Justin Rattner, Intel’s chief technology officer, “so as soon as you put down an appropriately equipped device it would immediately begin drawing power.”

“In the future, your kitchen counters might do it,” Mr. Rattner said. “You’d just drop your espresso maker down on them and you would never have to plug it in.”

The project is being led by Joshua R. Smith, an Intel researcher in Seattle, Washington. Marin Soljacic, an MIT physicist, pioneered the original technique, called resonant magnetic fields. Read more about this technology in an earlier article - Wireless Power For Laptops, Cellphones?.

The idea for wireless power transmission was first suggested by Nicola Tesla. Science fiction writers eagerly seized on the idea in the early twentieth century. In The Mightiest Machine, a novel serialized in Astounding Science-Fiction in 1934, the technology makes an appearance:

Aarn pushed a second standard into view, which was surmounted by a metal bowl that closely resembled a deep soup dish. The inner surface was evidently a parabolic one, made up of a maze of tiny coils, each oriented carefully toward some definite aim, while the entire rim of the "soup dish" was a single larger coil. Carefully Aarn adjusted it so that it pointed toward the flickering cage of copper wires, and beyond it to the apparatus at the other end of the bench. This apparatus seemed fairly simple, merely a number of standards with various arrangements of wires. Two parallel copper bars, a double spiral made of two insulated wires, two metal disks.

IT Salary survey says: "You've never had it so bad"
Dot-com crash a 'cake walk'

by Austin Modine

Posted in Financial News, 5th January 2009 19:51 GMT

Compared to the current job market, IT professionals should recall the collapse of the dot-com bubble with a fondness for the good ol' days.

That's according to the latest bi-annual IT salary survey from management consultant Janco Associates, which has painted a dreary picture for tech workers. The firm called current conditions "a perfect storm" of company closures, layoffs, cost cutting, outsourcing, and retirees returning to work. That massive surplus of IT talent is matched by what the firm reckons is the lowest hiring demand it has observed in the 15 plus years it's conducted the salary survey.

The study said that extensive layoffs, cost-cutting and hiring freezes have eliminated higher-priced positions, and in some cases lowered wages.

For "mid-size enterprises", the mean salary for all IT staff positions has dropped 0.75 per cent to $60,279 compared to a year ago. The mean salary across all mid-sized enterprise IT positions has dropped 2.91 per cent to $73,607.

For "large enterprises", IT staff position wages have dropped 0.89 per cent to $65,956. Mean salary across all IT positions have dropped 1.2 per cent to $81,128.

Many companies have also reduced benefits such as health care provided to IT professionals. While these benefits are still available, workers are now paying a greater portion of costs. For the second time in less than 10 years, retirements are being put off because of the downturn in the stock market.

Positions with high layoff and outsourcing potential for smaller companies include software engineer, network technician, network services admin, director of IT planning, manager of technical services, and disaster recovery admin. Positions that still have a high level of demand include database manager, internet systems manager, database specialist, and systems programmer.

"The job market for IT professionals is one of the worst that I have seen since the late 1970s. There is a surplus of IT talent and companies are in a cost-cutting mode," Janco Associates chief executive Victor Janulaitis said in a statement. "The dot-com bubble was a cake walk compared to this job market."

College courses: even "offline" classes are online now

By John Timmer | Published: January 04, 2009 - 05:00PM CT

This week's edition of Science contains a series of perspectives on how computer technology is changing the education system. Some of them focus on the purely hypothetical, such as the use of MMOs for educational purposes or the development of immersive artificial environments for education purposes. Two of the papers, however, review a real trend in education: the growing access to everything from educational materials to entire degree programs via the Internet.
The trend showed up throughout the articles. For example, the need to get educational material online was highlighted in the MMO article, which pointed out that the World of Warcraft subscriber base was over 20 times larger than the number of science, technology, engineering, and math degrees awarded annually in the US; even Lineage, which was released in 1999, still has a subscriber base that's more than twice as large.
If everyone's online anyway, it's no surprise that education is moving there as well. Many aspects of education are moving there formally, as a variety of online degree-granting programs have developed over the last decade. Some of these are commercial, online-only ventures, but those have been joined by programs developed by universities with a traditional, physical campus. For the most part, the online programs remain a fraction of the size of traditional student bodies, although, in some rare cases, schools are maintaining equal mixes of online and on-ground students.
The perspective that focuses on this topic suggests that the majority of those enrolled in online-only classes are doing so at the community college level, and that most take this route because they already have significant time commitments, like jobs. The same features that make online coursework appealing to these students—studying as other commitments allow, avoiding the time spent commuting to campus—appeal to the professors teaching these courses, as well. This, despite the fact that most find preparing for online classes to be more time-consuming than a standard lecture course.
The authors note that initial fears that online coursework would simply be dumped on adjunct professors appear to have been unfounded.
The heavy enrollment at the community college level and the role of commute time as a motivator may explain one of the odd demographic trends: aside from open universities in several countries, online-only education hasn't been big in Europe. Prestigious private universities in the US are also, with a few notable exceptions, staying on the sidelines for now.

Hedge funds slash IT spending
Author:Antony Savvas
Posted: 14:17 05 Jan 2009

Global IT spending by hedge funds will reach $1.35bn by the end of this year, representing a decrease of 20.5% year-over-year, says financial research firm Celent.

In a report, Hedge Fund IT Spending: The Inevitable Contraction, Celent assesses the consequences of the financial crisis and the resulting reorganisation of capital markets on the hedge fund industry, hedge fund IT spending and technology priorities.

With uncertainty surrounding capital markets and the scarcity of credit likely to spill into 2009, a substantial contraction in IT spending is inevitable, said Celent.

Growth rates will drop across all regions and contribute to lower total spending. However, cuts will be more pronounced in Europe and Asia, given the particularly dire performance of both regions' hedge funds.

The overarching theme of IT strategies in 2009 will be a focus on realising efficiency wins from existing applications infrastructure, whilst lowering maintenance costs or at least keeping the status quo, said Celent.

Spending on new technology will take a back seat. Unless faced with a collapsing platform, large system acquisitions or replacements are expected to be postponed.

"Approaches to thinking about and using technology will be transformed. Many of these changes will be transitory, some permanent. For the time being, cost-minimisation and operational efficiency are at the top of the operational agenda," said Isabel Schauerte, a Celent analyst.

Apple Security: Time To Stop Feeling Superior?
By Thomas Claburn
Read the Original Article at  InformationWeek
There have been far more Apple-related security problems in the past two years than in previous years, requiring Mac users to be more vigilant than ever to ensure that their computers are safe.

Apple issued 35 security updates in 2008, down slightly from the 38 issued in 2007, but significantly more than the 22 security updates in 2007 and 23 in 2005.

LiveLeak: uncensored version of YouTube

LONDON -- LiveLeak, the video-sharing website hosting a controversial Dutch anti-Islam film, is a kind of uncensored version of YouTube used notably by soldiers to share footage from warzones.

Based in Manchester, northwest England, it gained a high profile when it was used to post video of the hanging of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in December 2006.

At the time LiveLeak was insignificant compared to its US rival YouTube, but millions of websurfers clicked on it to see the controversial video of Saddam's final moments.

Since then it has gone from strength to strength, and has become the main outlet for US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to show the world what is happening from their point of view, unedited by the mainstream media.

"A lot of the time it's soldiers that want to share their experiences out there and show people how it really is," said LiveLeak co-founder Hayden Hewitt, who took part in a video debate hosted by NATO last month on the impact of new media on the military.

The site is in the spotlight because far-right Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders has used it to post his film "Fitna", featuring violent imagery of attacks in New York and Madrid intertwined with Koranic texts.

A handful of Muslim countries had responded to the film early Friday, with Iran saying the short movie showed some Westerners were waging a "vendetta" against Islam, while Bangladesh said the film could have "grave consequences."

LiveLeak has been plugged notably by former British prime minister Tony Blair, as a way of bypassing bias in mainstream and other media.

The site was created in October 2006 from the ashes of another even more extreme website, "Ogrish.com," which showed videos of war atrocities, crimes or road accidents.

Those behind LiveLeak did not respond to telephone calls after the Dutch film was posted Thursday on the site.

But a statement on the site read: "LiveLeak.com has a strict stance on remaining unbiased and allowing freedom of speech as so far as the law and our rules allow," the website said in a statement posted online.

"There was no legal reason to refuse Geert Wilders the right to post his film (Fitna) on LiveLeak.com and it is not our place to censor people based on an emotive response."

Posted on: Wednesday, 1 October 2008, 09:00 CDT

Webroot, a leading provider of security solutions for the consumer, enterprise and SMB markets, today announced that it has detected a new technique being used by hackers to lure PC users to fake blog sites containing malware.

"For the first time, hackers are capitalizing on the top news stories from Google Trends Labs, which lists the day's most frequently searched topics, which can include news of the Wall St. bail out or the presidential campaign," said Paul Piccard, director of Threat Research, Webroot. "These highly relevant news stories and videos are being posted to the hackers' fake blogs to increase the site's Google search rankings."

These fraudulent blogs contain several video links about the news story for which the users were originally searching. Once a user clicks on one of the video links, they are prompted to download a video codec that downloads a rogue antispyware program designed to goad the user into purchasing an illegitimate program that may put their personal information and data at even greater risk.

"Placing malware in video links on fake blogs is not a novel approach," explained Paul Lipman, Webroot's senior vice president and general manager of Consumer Business. "However, the fact that these hackers are now manipulating Google's methods for relevance to increase the ranking of these sites is new and greatly increases the number of people exposed to this threat."

Webroot recommends several steps to users to prevent this type of malware attack:

1) Always have a current version of antispyware, antivirus and firewall product;

2) Never download free product or purchase them from unknown Web sites and vendors, or peer-to-peer networks;

3) Download videos and other multimedia files only from known and trusted Web sites or blogs;

4) Make sure the computer is up-to-date by always installing the latest Microsoft or Apple security updates; and,

5) Use a credit card that has sufficient fraud protection when shopping and never use a debit card online.

Google hopes to take on Microsoft using resellers (Reuters)
• Posted on Wed Jan 14, 2009 12:51AM EST
• Add articles about technology to your My Yahoo!
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Web search leader Google Inc took another step on Wednesday toward direct competition with Microsoft Corp by recruiting IT resellers to market its Web-based applications to business clients.
From the end of March, authorized resellers will be able to sell, customize and support premium versions of Google Apps, which includes word processing, spreadsheets, calendars and email.
Google Apps is broadly similar to Microsoft's top-selling Office package except that Apps is completely Web-based and is part of Google's push into so called 'cloud computing' or software-as-a-service. Microsoft said in October it is also looking at adding Web-based features for its Office applications.
Since it launched Google Apps in February 2007, Google has only sold directly to business users over the Web. Analysts said the move to work with third parties is necessary if Google hopes to compete seriously with Microsoft or IBM.
Microsoft, which is the world's largest software company, sells more than 95 percent of its software through more than 440,000 third party resellers, according to Gartner Research, and intends to spend around $3 billion on managing those sales channels in 2009.
By comparison Google has so far only dipped its toe in the water, but sees a great opportunity after running trials with more than 50 resellers in 25 countries. It also has a 9-month old relationship with Salesforce.com Inc.
"We feel that Google has had limited success in winning customers with a singular sales channel," said Tiffani Bova, an analyst at Gartner Research, who estimates Google has around 200,000 Premier customers.
IT resellers typically sell services such as Web hosting, setting up servers and backing up data, as well as software to hundreds of thousands of end user businesses of all sizes.
"This is a chance for those types of companies to get into the cloud computing revolution," said Dave Girouard, president of enterprise at Google.
To win over new resellers, Google said partners will buy the Premier Edition at a 20 percent discount and keep the recurring revenue for the lifetime of their customer relationship.
The search leader already offers a basic package of Google Apps for free to consumers, prompting some industry watchers to see it as a major threat to Microsoft's profitable "Office" business.
But Rebecca Wettemann, an analyst at Nucleus Research, said Google is a long way from hurting Microsoft.
"We've seen in the applications space that Google is a strong email competitor, but so far it is only a complement to Office -- not yet a replacement," she said.
Google's move to offer applications is part of a wider drive to diversify its revenue base, which has been completely dominated by hugely profitable search advertising technology.
As the advertising market comes under pressure from a slowing global economy, investors will likely be paying more attention to Google's small but growing businesses.

Research newspaper, business magazine articles, or the Web to find
1.) A headline article related to I.T. that you feel will affect you directly.

Why businesses are embracing Macs -Google News
If this trend continues, I feel it will affect me directly if I were to be a Systems Analyst and be designing systems for large businesses someday. My solutions would have to be economically and practically viable to these clients who would be using these Macs. Logically therefore, I would have to adapt to these technologies and at least try to be a master of these systems which would practically be already there for use.

2.) Job/Career Opportunities in I.T.
Provide information on what the company's business is about, what is the job title/position being offered, job description, and the qualifications required.

1. Assistant Computer Systems Analyst - Asian Development Bank
2. MS SQL Database Administrator - DB Soft Philippines, Inc.
3. ColdFusion Developer - Affiliated Computer Services, Inc.
4. JDE Implementation Analyst - Affiliated Computer Services, Inc.
5. Programmer (Games), All Levels - Kuju Manila Inc.

3.) Traditional Brick-and-Mortar businesses that have ventured into the Dot-Com or e-Business.
Share why they have decided to ventured into Dot-Com, and what advantages it has given them. By going online, where they able to provide any Value Added Services or extra services to their customers?

Ayala Shopping Malls www.myayala.com
The largest online shopping mall in the Philippines , myAyala.com offers the most choices in flowers, food, prepaid cards, remittances, bills payment, gadgets, gifts, leisure, entertainment, etc. myAyala.com is a 50/50 joint venture of Ayala Land, Inc. and iAyala Co., Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ayala Corporation. iAyala was formed in early 2000 to carry the Ayala Group's interests in Internet and information technology ventures. myAyala.com , Inc. has an initial authorized stock of P100 million and initial paid-up capitalization of P50 million. The joint venture was formed to pursue various opportunities in e-commerce, among them B2C (business to consumer) and online shopping. This foray into online shopping is intended to tap the strengths of the Ayala Group in Commercial Centers Management, in particular, its long-standing relationship with mall merchants.

Dell, Inc. www.dell.com
Dell advertisements have appeared in several types of media including television, the Internet, magazines, catalogs and newspapers. Some of Dell Inc's marketing strategies include lowering prices at all times of the year, offering free bonus products (such as Dell printers), and offering free shipping in order to encourage more sales and to stave off competitors. In 2006, Dell cut its prices in an effort to maintain its 19.2% market share. However, this also cut profit-margins by more than half, from 8.7 to 4.3 percent. To maintain its low prices, Dell continues to accept most purchases of its products via the Internet and through the telephone network, and to move its customer-care division to India and El Salvador.

Satellite Broadband Internet for US Army in Afghanistan and Iraq
TS2 Satellite Technologies' network in Iraq and Afghanistan has over 15 thousand military users of local broadband satellite connections.

/EIN News/ TS2 specializes in providing global satellite communication services in areas with poor telecommunications infrastructure. Its basic transmission medium is a two-way transfer of data, which provides not only the Internet access and transfer of information within the network but also voice communications. This type of services is very often used by defense industries, Special Forces and Army.

"We were among the first telecommunications providers in the satellite technology in the territory of Iraq and Afghanistan and as such we have enjoyed a successful cooperation with the US Army for several years now" - says Marcin Frackiewicz, CEO of the TS2 Satellite Technologies.

TS2 Satellite Technologies http://www.ts2.pl offer two-way high-speed internet access with no phone lines, no cable, no dial-up modem. It's always on, available virtually anywhere, and affordable. The laptop, or WLAN network, can receive internet signal through a special satellite VSAT modem which is usually set up in a building or tent when deployed.

The Internet access has resulted in major morale improvements. Troops no longer feel cut off from home. This is especially important for the many who are married, and have young children. Not all the Internet connectivity is just for staying in touch with the folks back home. The troops use the Internet a lot for professional tasks, and not all of them are official business. Some troops blog, and many other stay in touch with military friends and associates in other parts of the world. The Internet has made possible many online communities composed of military professionals.

TS2's satellite military networks are located in Al Taqaddum AB, Bagram AF, Balad Airbase, Baquba Airfield, FOB Brassfield-Mora, LSA Adder Tallil, Camp Speicher, Camp Al Asad Air Base, Camp Bucca, Camp Buehring, Camp Charlie Basra, Camp Eggers, Camp Fallujah, Camp Grizzly, Camp Korean Village, Camp Liberty, Camp Mejid, Camp Ramadi, Camp Slayer, Camp Stryker, Camp Taji, Camp Victory, Fob Bagram, Fob Brassfield Mora, Fob Delta Al Kut, Fob Diamondback, Camp Falcon, Fob Garryowen, Fob Gardez, Fob Ghazni, Fob Kalagush, Kandahar Base, Fob Lagman, Fob Mchenry, Fob Marez, Fob Normandy, Fob Rustamiyah, Fob Summerall, Fob Sykes, Fob Salerno, Fob Torkham, Fob Warhorse, Fob Warrior, Herat RTC, Jallaabad Air Base, Kabul Airport, Kabul Camp Eggers, Kandahar Air Base, Lsa Anaconda Balad, Sather Air Base and Q-West Base Complex.

commerce platform vendors and ATG's acknowledgement for combining "a strong and well-rounded eCommerce feature set with an array of targeting, personalization, and customer interaction tools."

Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) expanded its reach into brick-and-mortar stores overseas with its announcement Wednesday that its British arm, Amazon.co.uk, has teamed up with European mobile phone provider Carphone Warehouse to offer customers pre-paid phones online.

According to Carphone Warehouse, the deal is the first brick-and-mortar partnership for Amazon in Europe.

Amazon.co.uk's new electronics storefront, which is now co-branded with Carphone, offers pre-pay versions of mobile phone brands such as Nokia, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) , Siemens, Panasonic and Sony.

Amazon.co.uk is responsible for the stocking, selling and delivering of the phones, while Carphone Warehouse will feature Amazon offers both on its own Web site and at its offline retail stores. Later this year, the agreement will be extended to include landline phones.

Cautious Strategy
The agreement with Carphone continues Amazon's strategy of allying exclusively with established brand name companies. Carphone has 1,059 stores across 15 markets, including Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain, with e-commerce Web sites in five countries.

Carphone sells mobile phones and services from major manufacturers and service providers. According to the company, Carphone's retail business served over 3.8 million customers for the year ending March 31st, an increase of 63 percent over the same period last year.

The company posted yearly net income growth of nearly 26 percent in 2000, up approximately US$26 million.

Carphone Warehouse also operates its own wireless-accessible Internet portal, Mviva, which offers news, online shopping, and other services through a partnership with AOL Europe. Mviva is currently in five European markets, with plans to expand throughout Europe over the next year.

Photo Finish
Amazon also announced an exclusive agreement with a German digital photography company, PixelNet, that will provide customers of Amazon's German site, Amazon.de, with online photo printing services.

PixelNet offers a mail-order photo processing service for analog film, as well as digital processing that is conducted over the Internet. Pictures taken using digital cameras are sent via the Internet to the PixelNet laboratory, which then produces print copies and sends them to the customer free of mailing charges.

PixelNet posted a loss before interest and tax of 2.08 million euros (approximately US$1.75 million) in the first quarter, but says it expects annual increases in sales over the next two years to average 250 percent.

Big Bricks Only
Amazon has generally bucked the e-commerce trend of relying on brick-and-mortar alliances for survival, with a few major exceptions.

The co-branded site launched almost a year ago by Amazon and Toys 'R' Us' has proven quite successful in driving sales for both companies. Moreover, the two expanded their alliance in May with the plan to integrate the Toys 'R' Us-owned Babiesrus.com site into Amazon's pages.

Computer-Related Jobs: Now is the Time to Prepare
Friday, September 12th, 2003
Information technology jobs are getting hot again, and the time to train for them is now, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In a recent study that listed the fastest growing occupations between now and 2010, the bureau noted that the top seven fastest growing occupations fall within an IT or computer-related field.
They are:
• Computer software engineers, applications
• Computer support specialists
• Computer software engineers, software systems
• Network and computer systems administrators
• Network systems and data communications analysts
• Desktop publishers
• Database administrators
According to the bureau, "Learning the technical skills necessary to work in these occupations remains paramount. Specialized certification and degree programs are the primary ways workers train for information technology occupations."
With programs ranging from computer programming to network security, North Seattle Community College is ready to provide this training. "We’re finding that many of our students have trained for other fields and are coming back to school to sharpen their skills and knowledge in the informational technology area,” said Betsy Campbell, IT instructor. "Even though there has been a slump in the informational technology industry itself, employers still need people with solid computer skills," she added.
The college’s experience is backed up by a recent study by the National Science Foundation that found that most workers who held a computer-related job had not majored in IT or computer-related fields but had bolstered their skills with technical training tailored to specific demands of their positions.
North offers classes in microcomputer applications, programming, web development, database management, network operating systems, network management, CISCO and network security. Enrollment and registration is now open for the winter quarter, which begins January 5.
More information is available in the class schedule and by contacting the Business, Engineering and Information Technology Division at 527-3730.

News:

A search is launched for Conficker's first victim
by Robert McMillan

March 20, 2009, 08:25 AM — IDG News Service —

Where did the Conficker worm come from? Researchers at the University of Michigan are trying to find out, using a vast network of Internet sensors to track down the so-called "patient zero" of an outbreak that has infected more than 10 million computers to date.

The university uses so-called darknet sensors that were set up about six years ago in order to keep track of malicious activity. With funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, computer scientists have banded together to share data collected from sensors around the world place sensors around the world.

"The goal is to get close enough so you can actually start mapping out how the spread started," said Jon Oberheide, a graduate student with the University of Michigan who is working on the project.

That's not an easy job. To find the minuscule clues that will identify the victim, researchers must sift through more than 50 terabytes of data, hoping to find the telltale signatures of a Conficker scan.

One of the ways that Conficker moves about is by scanning the network for other vulnerable computers, but it can be really hard to spot it for certain, Oberheide said. "The hard thing is to find the exact Conficker scanning activity, because there is a lot of other scanning going on," he said.

Tracking down patient zero has been done, however. In 2005, researchers tracked the 2004 Witty worm's first victim, (pdf) a U.S. military base, and even identified the European IP address used to launch the attack.

It's been years since anything as widespread as Conficker has surfaced however, so there have not been many chances to reproduce this effort.

When Conficker first appeared in October, though, researchers caught a break. Other worms had dodged this kind of analysis by blocking the darknet IP addresses, but Conficker's authors didn't do that. "We were kind of surprised that it did this completely random scan, and didn't blacklist our particular sensors," Oberheide said. "If they'd done a little bit of research, they could have discovered our [network]."

Soon after the Conficker outbreak the Michigan researchers saw a big spike on their sensors, which they attributed to the worm. The network was collecting about 2G of data per hour in November, but these days it's closer to 8G. "The increase in activity we've seen on these Darknet sensors is… incredible," Oberheide said. "Now this data is actually useful; we can go back six months and see what this worm was actually doing," he added.

Another group, called CAIDA (the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis) published a Conficker analysis earlier this month. The Michigan researchers hope to post a similar analysis of their data in with the next few weeks, but it could be months before they narrow things down to patient zero.

In the meantime, "the goal is to get close enough so you can actually start mapping out how the spread started," Oberheide said.
